MoMo Dublin – Nov. 21 – BlackBerry App Devs

MobileMonday Dublin presents another free networking event for our local community of mobile professionals.

This time we focus our attention on developing apps for the BlackBerry platform.

Announcing the company’s Q2-11 results on 15 Sept., Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at Research In Motion said: “We will continue to build on the success of the BlackBerry 7 launch to drive the business as we focus our development efforts on delivering the next generation, QNX-based mobile platform next year.”

In July 2011, BlackBerry App World was available in over 100 countries, seeing an average of 3 million downloads per day, and they also crossed the 1 billion app download milestone! The opportunity for Irish developers is clear.

This MobileMonday Dublin event will provide a unique chance to get the inside track from RIM’s senior developer relations expert Alex Bowker.

MoMo Dublin 2011 Events update

All, it’s been a long time since we’ve had any activity in MoMo Dublin. I’ve got one update and one question to pose to the group.

First, an update. A few of the MoMo Dublin crew have started to work to organise the next couple of events. We’ve been working with the crew in from MoMo Belfast to try to organise the first event that gathers people from both communities. We thought that we might be able to get something organised around the end of May but we had trouble getting the sponsors and speakers so we are pushing that event to September. In the meantime, we may try to have a summmer BBQ event some time in June, probably June 13th. If anyone would like to help out, or speak or sponsor, please let me know.

Secondly, a question. Does anyone in the group feel that an occasional OpenCoffee-like meeting would be useful? This means a casual meeting in some cafe in the city center, during business hours, with no set agenda or speakers etc. It’s simply a meeting of people with an interest in mobile. In my (limited) experience with OpenCoffee this can be quite useful for networking and ideas. Doing it during business hours also opens it up to people who have commitments after work. Another good reason for doing this is that it has proved too demanding on peoples’ time to arrange the traditional MoMo events.

Mobile Premier Awards 2010

mpa_logo_w_091105_d1It’s that time of year again, except this time the name has been changed: the Mobile Premier Awards (MPA), née Global Peer Awards, are upon us again.

Despite the name change, the event is essentially the same: a global grassroots competition open to all MobileMonday chapters to nominate a local startup to eventually pitch in a full house of the industry’s influencers and decision makers in Barcelona, during the Mobile World Congress on February 15, 2010.

We need to pick our own “local most innovative startup”  and nominate them as one of 20 finalists. Then, an international jury of the most recognized mobile industry experts will select the 20 finalists from all the local chapter nominees to pitch at the event in Barcelona in front of investors, operators, media companies, peer entrepreneurs, and press and influential bloggers.

Any thoughts on how to select our shortlist? One possibility is to accept nominations via comments on this article but I’m open to suggestions. We’re required to close the competition by December 31st midnight local time and our submission to the competition must be made by January 6th, 2010 midnight local time.

Last year’s nomination from MoMo Dublin was Dial2Do. Who will it be this year?

Rebooting MoMo Dublin

It’s been quite a while since we had our last meeting. We were going to try to organise something in the March time frame this year but preparation for and recovery after MWC in Barcelona, and changes in the economy conspired against us.

In order to get things going again in a relatively gentle way, we were thinking about two alternatives:

  1. An unthemed casual meetup. This would be something like our previous format, but with no organised speakers or theme (or sponsorship). This makes the event more a casual meeting of mobile folk than a more formal MoMo event, with the tremendous advantage of being much simpler to organise (no speakers to corral), the downside being that you’d have to pay for your own drinks.
  2. A OpenCoffee-like event, held during the day in some cafe, probably somewhere near the city center. This would be something of a break with the Mobile Monday format, but may suit people better and draw a new and different audience.

We’d like to hear your thoughts. Please comment here or email the list (momodublin@yahoogroups.co.uk).

Site updates

I’ve just upgraded the mobile view of this site to use the dotMobi WordPress Mobile Plugin – if you visit this site using a mobile device, or use the momodublin.mobi address, you should now see a very nicely rendered mobile view of the site. This plugin is highly recommended for any WordPress users out there that want to make their site mobile-friendly. It’s very easy to install and, in addition to providing a mobile view of the site, also provides a very useful mobile admin panel, barcode link for your site and one-click integration with Google Mobile or Admob ads.

MoMo Dublin’s submission for MobileMonday Mobile Peer Awards 2009

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to say that Dial2Do have been put forward as the nomination of MoMo Dublin for the MoMo Peer Awards in Barcelona this year. The final winners will be decided on February 16th as part of Mobile World Congress 2009 (née 3GSM). The nominations from the other MoMo chapters can be found on the main peer awards site: http://www.mobilepeerawards.com/

Due to an unexpected deadline for submission we didn’t have time to run a proper public poll for this. The winner was chosen from the 3 nominations (3G Doctor, Locle & Dial2Do) by a number of colleagues and the decision was more or less unanimous. I apologise for not having held a public poll for this but by the time I found out about the final submission deadline it was far too late.

Congratulations Rococo and commiserations to the other entrants.
